Israel-Drought Tax

The Israeli Water conservation efforts rise to a new level as a new tax on water came into effect, in hopes of making Israeli household take the need to stop wasting water a little more seriously. The purpose of the tax is to make people aware of the amounts of water they use and encourage them to cut unnecessary waste of the precious resource.

Mediterranean Monk Seal

Mediterranean Monk Seal The Mediterranean Monk Seal was once found extensively throughout southern Europe and northern Africa but it is now one of the world's rarest seal species with an estimated 350-450 remaining individuals in the wild. Extensive commercial hunting from Roman times coupled with over-fishing and urbanisation have resulted in a dramatic reduction in this species number, making it a real possibility that it could go the same way as it's relative, the Caribbean Monk Seal - declared extinct in 2008. Hellio & Van Ingen have documented recent conservation efforts at one of the last remaining strongholds in Mauritania.

Undersea eruptions near Tonga

Scientists sailed out to have a closer look at the eruptions of an undersea volcano off the coast of Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean today. Tonga's head geologist, Kelepi Mafi, said there was no apparent danger to residents of Nuku'alofa and others living on the main island of Tongatapu. Officials also said it may be related to a quake with a magnitude of 4.4 which struck last March 13 around 35 kilometers from the capital at a depth of nearly 150 kilometres. (I know this is an off-day posting, but really, thought the images were worth it - 12 photos total)
